Douglas County is one of Colorado’s original territorial counties, officially established in 1861, the same year Colorado became a U.S. territory. Named in honor of Stephen A. Douglas, a U.S. Senator and political leader best known for the Lincoln-Douglas debates, the county was originally a sprawling agricultural region and ranching community that supported the early growth of Denver and surrounding towns.
In its early development, Douglas County became a vital corridor for stagecoach travel, rail transportation, timber production, and livestock movement. Located along the historic Plum Creek trading route, the county played a significant role in the expansion of commerce and settlement across Colorado. After devastating flooding in 1965 destroyed much of the town of Castle Rock and nearby communities, the area rebuilt, modernized, and entered a period of rapid growth that continues today.
Covering more than 840 square miles, Douglas County now includes communities such as Castle Rock, Parker, Lone Tree, Highlands Ranch, Sedalia, and Roxborough Park, blending rural landscapes, suburban environment, and high-end residential development. As one of the fastest-growing and highest-income counties in the United States, Douglas County is known for exceptional schools, outdoor recreation, and strong economic stability, including major business corridors along I-25 and proximity to the Denver Tech Center.
