Jefferson County History and Community Overview
Jefferson County—commonly known as JeffCo—is one of Colorado’s original counties, founded on November 1, 1861, during the early days of the Colorado Territory. Named in honor of Thomas Jefferson, the third U.S. President and author of the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson County emerged as a vital settlement region during the Colorado Gold Rush, when miners and pioneers were drawn to the rich deposits found in nearby mountain communities such as Golden and Central City.
Golden served as the original capital of the Colorado Territory from 1862 to 1867, before state government relocated to Denver. During this time, Jefferson County became a center of early transportation, milling operations, ranching, and manufacturing. The arrival of the railroad and development of major supply routes helped transform the region into a key connection point between the plains and the mountains.
Covering approximately 774 square miles, Jefferson County now includes diverse communities such as Lakewood, Arvada, Golden, Wheat Ridge, Littleton (portion), Conifer, Evergreen, Edgewater, and Morrison. The area offers a unique blend of suburban living, historic mountain towns, and breathtaking outdoor attractions, including Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Lookout Mountain, Evergreen Lake, and Bear Creek Lake Park.
Today, Jefferson County is one of the most populated and economically influential regions in the state, home to more than 583,000 residents, thriving business development, and major educational institutions such as the Colorado School of Mines. The county is also known for its commitment to public service, safety, and strong community support networks.
