Larimer County was one of Colorado’s earliest counties, established on November 1 1861, shortly after the Colorado Territory was organized. It was named in honor of William A. Larimer, a pioneer, early Denver founder and Territorial legislator. The county originally stretched into vast territories, but over the years it was carved into smaller counties as the region developed.
Covering about 2,634 square miles, Larimer County lies in northern Colorado and features striking diversity: from the high-plains ranch lands east of Fort Collins to the dramatic peaks of the Rocky Mountains in Rocky Mountain National Park to the west. The county has deep roots in agriculture, early railroads, and energy, and today combines strong rural traditions with one of the state’s leading technology, education and research centers.
Key moments and features include:
- Agricultural & Ranching Legacy: Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, Larimer County was famed for its cattle, sheep, sugar-beet farms and grain production.
- University & Innovation: Home to University of Northern Colorado in Greeley and Colorado State University in nearby Fort Collins, the county is now a hub of research and development, clean energy and outdoor trade.
- Transportation & Growth: With major corridors like I-25 and US-287, and the Fort Collins-Loveland Airport, Larimer County has grown rapidly — among the fastest-growing counties in Colorado in the past two decades.
- Outdoor Lifestyle: From Horsetooth Reservoir and Cache La Poudre River canyon to the foothills and mountain valleys, residents enjoy year-round outdoor activities — hiking, skiing, rafting, biking, and more.
Communities include Fort Collins, Loveland, Windsor, Berthoud, Estes Park, Timnath, Wellington, and beyond. The region blends a youthful university town energy, suburban amenities, thriving industry and classic Colorado small-town character.
My roots and role: As someone who was born and raised in nearby Adams County and now lives in Firestone, I bring a deeply local perspective and commitment to this region. Even though Larimer County became my professional focus more recently, I bring the same devotion: helping families in Larimer County and its courts/jails navigate urgent bail matters with compassion, speed and integrity. I understand not just the bonds process — I understand Colorado’s communities, culture, and the values that matter here.
